Movement
Movement is arguably the greatest period of development that infants go through. They go from being incapable of intentional movement to walking and dancing within 18 months. When given the space for free movement, infants can do great things! They can independently learn to roll over, sit, crawl and walk. In our classroom, we employ many gross motor activities to meet the infant’s growing capabilities. For example, we have mobiles, pull up bars, a push toy, a tunnel and a climber all designed to encourage infants to practice their movements. Movement development cannot be discussed without recognizing the great fine motor development that takes place as well. Children in their first year learn to feed themselves and manipulate the materials around them with their hands which is integral to the preparation of writing skills!
